Would’ve been cool to have mentioned August Willich. He was a German socialist who was friends with Engles. He challenged Marx to a duel because Marx would get drunk and challenge people to duels. Marx refused. Then he left to go to war against the Confederates in an all German battalion. He was at Shiloh. He helped with the Atlanta campaign. At the end of their lives, Marx said of him ”he was more than a visionary.” I think those two’s stories told together paint a picture of a varied approach.
